Kolkata: Bangladesh captain Jamal Bhuyan will sign for Mohammedan Sporting Club for the upcoming season of I-League, SportsLight Media can confirm. The Danish-born footballer, who plays as a midfielder, will sign for a one-year deal on a reported fee of 7000 USD per month. He will become the second Bangladeshi footballer after Mamunul Islam to play in Kolkata. Islam played for ATK.
Mohammedan Sporting have gained promotion in the I-League after seven long years after they remained unbeaten in the Qualifiers which ended earlier this month. “Yes, Jamal Bhuyan is signing for Mohammedan Sporting on a one-year deal,” a club source told this website. “We are also signing Alwyn George, Raphael Ownrebe,” he confirmed.
This is not the first time Bhuyan will be playing in Kolkata. He led Bangladesh to a 1-1 draw against India in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers last year at the Salt Lake Stadium. There were rumours that Bhuyan was offered by the Indian Super League side Odisha FC for the 2020-21 season. However, the rumours were quashed by the club itself.
Born in the Danish town of Glostrup in 1990, Bhuyan grew up in the suburb of Brøndby Nord. His parents migrated to Denmark from Bangladesh in the late 60s. At the age of 15, Bhuyan was playing for the Danish outfit Brøndby IF.
On the other hand, the Nigerian Ownrebe has been playing in the Bangladesh Premier League since 2017 when he joined Sheikh Jamal. In his maiden season in Bangladesh, he was the top-scorer of the league with 15 goals before moving to Sheikh Russell the following year.
Meanwhile, Mohammedan Sporting have already announced Jose Carlos Rodriguez Hevia as their head coach for the 2020-21 I-League season. The 48-year-old previously held the post of technical director of coaching and youth development at Shillong Lajong FC until August this year.
