UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid upset Chelsea; Villarreal stun Bayern Munich to qualify for next round

Madrid: Real Madrid advanced to the next round of the UEFA Champions League after winning the tie against Chelsea at an aggregate of 5-4. The return leg of the match was however won by Chelsea by 3-2 but it did not prove to be enough.

Karim Benzema scored a hattrick at Stamford Bridge and helped Real Madrid secure a comfortable 3-1 win in the first leg. Although, the return leg proved to be challenging for the 13 times UCL winners as Chelsea started on a strong note.

Chelsea came to Santiago Bernabeu with grit and determination and that showed on the pitch. Chelsea were at a point 3-0 up against Madrid. Mason Mount scored the opening goal with an impeccable build-up and finish. Antonio Rudiger doubled the lead at 51 minutes and Timo Werner scored the third at 75 minutes.

The match looked under control for Chelsea however Rodrygo scored a goal for Madrid from a delectable ball by Luka Modric, this ensured the match went to extra time. In extra time, Karim Benzema yet again scored a header and rescued his team.

The defending champions crashed out the tournament with a fight worth remembering. Elsewhere, Villarreal defeated Bayern Munich in 2-1 aggregate. Unai Emery’s side won the first leg at home with a 1-0 scoreline.

However, during the return leg at Allianz Arena, Villarreal put a fight to remember as they held the Bundesliga Champions to a 1-1 draw, coming from behind. Bayern Munich who were crowned the champions in 2020 crashed out after losing to a 7th placed La Liga team.
