IPL 2022: Chennai Super Kings beat Royal Challengers Bangalore to taste season’s first win

Mumbai: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered their first victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

Defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 23 runs at the DY Patil Stadium, Maheesh Theekshana’s remarkable four-wicket haul helped CSK secure the win. With Shivam Dube’s 95* and Robin uthappa’s 88, CSK reached a massive total of 216/4 in the first innings.

Ruturaj Gaikwad hit three fours but RCB bowlers enjoyed a good start with the new ball as Josh Hazlewood dismissed Gaikwad. CSK were 35-1 at the end of powerplay. With RCB debutant Suyash Prabhudessais’ sharp fielding efforts, CSK lost their second wicket to run out Moeen Ali for 3 runs.

Coming third, Shivam Dube started aggressively with a four and six each. CSK were at 60 after 10 overs. With Dube and Uthappa smashing ropes and stands, CSK switched gears. Dube crossed his half-century as the hundred partnership was up for the third wicket. CSK were 145-2 with four overs to go.

Uthappa clobbered two sixes and a four in the 17th over and 24 runs off the 18th over. Hasaranga scalped two wickets on consecutive deliveries to dismiss Uthappa and CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja. Dube finished the innings with two giant sixes in the last over. Remained unbeaten on 95 CSK posted a commanding total of 216-4 in the first innings.

Chasing the mammoth target of 217, RCB lost skipper Faf du Plessis at an early. Sri Lankan Maheesh Theekshana took his maiden IPL wicket with the South African getting caught. The top order of Bangalore collapsed within the powerplay. Virat Kohli got caught in the deep off to Mukesh Chaudhary’s bowling, while Theekshana trapped Anuj Rawat.

Glenn Maxwell scored a 26 off 11 deliveries, nevertheless Jadeja crashed a delivery into the stumps. Suyash Prabhudessai and Shahbaz Ahmed recovered RCB to stitch a fifty partnership. with Prabhudessai dioing the majority of the hitting, RCB were 110-4 after 12 overs. Theekshana claimed his third wicket to end the partnership after Prabhudessai. RCB were off 86 runs, in the final six overs.

As Dinesh Karthik provided a reprieve, Shahbaz Ahmed was bowled by Theekshana. CSK skipper Jadeja grabbed two wickets. Hasaranga was caught in the deep, Akash Deep was caught by Rayudu, who took a terrific diving catch inside the circle. Dinesh Karthik hammered 23 runs off the 17th with two sixes and a four. Captain Jadeja took a sharp catch in the deep to bring an end to the marvellous cameo from Dinesh Karthik and CSK successfully defended the total in the end.
