London : Tottenham Hotspur continued with their dominance in the Barclays English Premier League as they beat Manchester City 2-0 on Saturday, at the White Hart Lane. Goals by Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso sealed the deal for the London side as they march to the top of the league table for the moment.
The match started with a bang as Son opened the scoring for Spurs in the 5th minute of the match. But, Manchester City with so many stars in their side was dominating game. All through the first half City tried every trick on their book to score an equilizer to settle the contest for them. But it wasn’t easy for them as Spurs with their ultra defensive tactics was ruling out all the City attacks. The first half ended with Spurs 1 City 0. But no doubt City had the fair share of chances in the first half, even a goal by Aymeric Laporte was ruled out by VAR. The second half started on the similar fashion. City with their positional football was taking edge over Spurs but was failing in the final third. Eric Dier was like a rock in the Spurs defence as he with his partners were defending every other City threat. Then came a master stroke by Jose Mourinho. He replaced Steven Bergwijn with Lo Celso. And his first touch was a Midas touch. He scored the second goal for Spurs on the 65th minute and it was seal the deal for Spurs. City manager Pep Guardiola tried to inject fresh legs by introducing Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling but they looked out of shape. Actually the Bus of Mourinho was parked pretty well and every other City attack was stopped. This win took them to the top of the league for now and for City it’s no more but only disaster.
Spurs looked sharp under Mourinho this season. The way he has been using his players is really good to see. Players like Eric Dier, Bergwijn, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Serge Aurier has been dynamic and they are performing pretty well in every match. No doubt Harry Kane and Son has been their star man but these players are doing just what Mourinho wants from them. It’s great to see a team with so many talented players performing so well this season under a champion manager. Son has been their talisman, the South Korean has scored his ninth goal after Saturday’s goal against City and is the leading goal scorer this season in the league. It’s great to see a box striker like Kane coming down and defending for his side and even contributing to score goals. The English captain is having one of the best season of his career. It’s joy for Jose, the Special One is changing everything in the other side of London. It’s really good to see them play such fearless football.
City on the other hand has been missing a positive goal scorer this season. They are missing Sergio Aguero. The Argentine who has been suffering injury every now and then has been a problem for Pep. Kevin De Bryune has been the lone wolf in the pack. He has been trying everything to win, but just lacking enough support. For Ferran Torres it’s early days in England, he needs time, it’s always difficult for a youngster like him to fill the boots of Leroy Sané. Pep must think of his game play, it’s getting outdated now, so much position but no goals. He needs to come out of the FC Barcelona hangover which he has been carrying on for years now. It’s been his worst possible start as a manager in world football and City’s worst possible start since the Seikh Mansoor take over. They have to think and find a way out or else it might be a mid-table finish the English giants.
In other matches, Chelsea beat Newcastle United 2-0.
Brighton won 2-1 against Aston Villa.
