Liverpool: Liverpool wonder-kid Harvey Elliott has been the talk of the town lately, manager Jürgen Klopp claimed after the teenager had a striking performance in Reds’ 2-0 win over Burnley in the Premier League on the weekend.
“Everybody wants to talk to me about Harvey and I understand absolutely,” Klopp told the club’s website. Although Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane were the heroes of Liverpool’s win against Burnley, all eyes were on Elliott who probably had the most exciting debut one could dream of.
Elliot did enough to seem at par in a team consisting of stars players like Virgin Van Djik, Mohammed Salah and Mané, and even stood out among them. Two years back, at 16 years and 30 days, Elliott was the youngest player ever to play in Premier League before he made a move to Anfield from Fulham.
On Saturday, he was the youngest player to debut for Liverpool as well. Klopp was evidently impressed with the 18-year-old who had 77 touches in the entire match and wasn’t shy in admitting his happiness for the youngster.
“When an 18-year-old boy plays such a mature game I can understand why everyone was asking, but I was not surprised he played like this,” said the former Borussia Dortmund manager.
“That is exactly how he has trained now for six or seven weeks since we are back, since he is back from loan. Yes, it was a good.” Last season, Liverpool loaned Elliott to Blackburn Rovers and Klopp said the teenager’s time playing in English football’s second-tier had been key for his development.
“He is a wonderful talent,” Klopp told the BBC. “The step he made in the Championship was massive. “He can play two, three, four positions — he’s a really smart footballer.” Liverpool fans all over the world were stirred by his performance and Twitter exploded as they expressed their joy over the win.
While some claimed that Elliot was ready for a place in the English squad, others claimed him to be better than Jack Grealish who had joined Manchester City on a record transfer.
