Durand Cup 2022; Quarterfinal: Mumbai City FC face Chennaiyin FC test

Kolkata: Mumbai City FC (MCFC) and Chennaiyin FC (CFC) are tough contenders as they clash in the third quarter-final of the 131st Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK).

Mumbai City FC have been the group toppers, while the Marina Machans have qualified by finishing a clear second to reigning Indian Super League (ISL) champions Hyderabad FC.

“No fitness issues in the team,” CFC coach Thomas Brdaric. Mumbai City FC coach Des Buckingham said, “Whether its Champions League or Durand, our approach won’t change,”

Chennaiyin have been banking heavily midfielder Anirudh Thapa to deliver some goods which he has done so far quite good with five goal contributions. Mumbai on the other hand have tournament’s highest scorer Lallianzuala Chhangte. Their efforts have helped both their sides to overcome a when they have conceded six (CFC) and seven (MCFC) goals respectively.

A lot will depends on the foreign players as well. The likes of Ahmed Jahouh and Gary Stewart for the Islanders and Vafa and Petar Sliskovic for Chemnaiyin FC have shown the potential to turn games consistently. Des Buckingham have spoken about Murtada Fall who have joined the side and the Senegalese defender has been one of the most successful players in Indian football in recent times.
