Dubai: Magnus Carlsen successfully defended his world championship for the fourth time, which he initially won in 2013 from Viswanathan Anand. Before defeating Nepo, he defeated Anand (2014-World Rapid Championship and World Blitz Championship), Sergey Karjakin (2016), and Fabiano Caruana (2018). With this, he earned five world titles in his name.
Carlsen ended Ian Nepomniachtchi’s anguish in Dubai on Friday, winning the 11th game of their best-of-14 game World chess championship match with three games to spare.
Carlsen used a tactical strategy to punish Nepo’s mistake, which he made on the 23rd move, and finally finished the job in 49 moves. The champion’s fourth win, his second with black, resulted in a final score of 7.5-3.5.
“I’m relieved, of course. It’s hard to feel that great joy when the situation was so comfortable to begin with, but I’m happy with a very good performance overall,” was Carlsen’s initial reaction after winning his fifth world title.
