Dhaka: The Indian men’s hockey team will play in the 2021 Men’s Asian Champions Trophy in Dhaka, following their historic achievement in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. India, the defending champion, will commence the tournament on December 14 when they face South Korea in their opener.
The Men in Blue will be short of eight players from the Tokyo Games team, including experienced goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. The tournament might see a chance for certain periphery and future talents to make their claims in their absence.
The tournament features Asia’s top six field hockey teams in the round-robin format. With three titles apiece, Pakistan and India are the most successful teams in the Men’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy. Following cancellation due to persistent rains, India and Pakistan were proclaimed joint winners of the 2018 Men’s Asian Champions Trophy.
