Kolkata : Indian team is in hunt for skipper Rohit Sharma’s successor in Test team. As per reports, there’s a senior player who’s shown keen interest in taking up captaincy.

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy and Batting form have hit rock bottom in Test Cricket for some months. Under his leadership, India got whitewashed against New Zealand 3-0 on home soil after 12 years.

In Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, when Jasprit Bumrah was interim captain in Perth Test, India won it convincingly. However, as soon as Rohit returned to his leadership role, the team began to flop and after 4th Test, Indian team is trailing by 2-1, and their WTC 2025 final hopes are almost over. Hence, there are reports of change in captaincy from next WTC Cycle, after the Sydney Test, if India don’t qualify into WTC final.

Although Rohit hasn’t cleared his role in Test Cricket’s future, Indian team is in search of new Test leader. Though it was pace bowling icon Jasprit Bumrah who led the team in Rohit’s absence in Perth, it has been reported that multiple players in the Indian dressing room were keen on the leadership role.

As per Indian Express report, a certain senior player in the team proposed his name for ‘interim captaincy’. The same player also branded himself as ‘Mr. Fix-It’ while putting forward a case to resolve the current chaos that the team seems to be in.

The senior player showing captaincy ambitions, isn’t too impressed with certain young leadership candidates in the team. He feels that certain youngsters, showing interest in leadership roles, still have some way to go and are not currently fit enough for captaincy role at present.

However, the senior player’s name who’s shown captaincy ambition is unknown till now. There’re several senior players in the team apart from Rohit Sharma and next probable captain Jasprit Bumrah – Virat Kohli (although stepped down from captaincy in 2022), KL Rahul (previously captained in multiple occasions), Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant.

With Rohit expected to hang his boots in the longest format after the conclusion of the series, Bumrah is undoubtedly the No. 1 candidate to replace him. The vice-captaincy, however, might have two candidates in the form of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.
