Kolkata : Former Australian Legend, ‘Mr. Cricket’ , Mike Hussey has backed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to perform well in Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 despite their dip in form recently.
New Zealand whitewashed India in their home soil 3-0. This was 1st home Test series defeat for India in 11 years. Notably, the 2 veterans and pillars of Indian Cricket – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma came under hammers of criticism for their lackluster form throughout the series.
Speaking to Fox Cricket, Hussey stated that, despite the poor performance and series against New Zealand, no one should write off champion and ‘proud’ players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. As per him, even if they come under criticisms, they perform well later.
“We’ll find out in that first Test match where they are at mentally and from a skill perspective as well. It was a shock to see them lose to New Zealand 3-0. You just don’t see that happen over there, ever, really. So they’ll be hurt by this – India and they’ve got a lot of proud players and a lot of quality,” Mike Hussey said on Fox Sports.
Hussey terming writing off Virat and Rohit as ‘silliest thing’ one can do, has backed them to perform well in upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
“You could hear earlier Gautam Gambhir talking about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma not making runs. Well, the silliest thing you can do is to write off champion players and we’ve seen it so many times in the past. They come under a bit of criticism and come out and perform really well. So I’m backing those guys in particular to perform really strongly in Australia. They are proud Indians, they’re proud Test cricketers and they’ll put in a good performance. So I’m expecting to see the best of India, but I still think Australia will start favourites and will be primed to win this series,” he further added.
India need to win 4 out of 5 Matches in the BGT 2024-25 to qualify into WTC 2025 final. The series will start from November 22, 2024.
