IPL 2021: Sherfane Rutherford replaces Jonny Bairstow in Sunrisers Hyderabad's squad

New Delhi: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have added West Indies batsman Sherfane Rutherford to their squad following the withdrawal of England’s Jonny Bairstow ahead of the resumption of the UAE leg of IPL 2021 slated to begin from September 19.

The franchise took to Twitter to make the announcement on Saturday. “The explosive Caribbean is now a #Riser! Sherfane Rutherford will replace Jonny Bairstow in our squad for the second phase of #IPL2021,” the franchise announced via their Twitter handle.

Rutherford, also a handy right-arm medium pacer, has made 1102 runs in the T20 format at a strike rate of 138.26. Rutherford played in IPL in 2019, where he represented defending champions Mumbai Indians.

Rutherford has managed to score just 73 runs across 7 games at a strike rate of 135.18 while also picking up a wicket. He is currently playing his trade with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League and is having a good season where he scored 202 runs in 7 games including 3 half-centuries.

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings also announced South Africa opener Aiden Markram as David Malan’s replacement for the remainder of the tournament.

England batsman Dawid Malan, who was supposed to play for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), pulled out of IPL 2021 to spend time with his family barely a week before the tournament resumed on September 19 in the UAE.

“Ahead of the resumption of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League, Punjab Kings today announced the inclusion of South African cricketer Aiden Markram to the squad. Markram will replace Dawid Malan who is taking some time off to be with his family before the T20 World Cup and the Ashes Series,” PBKS announced on Saturday.

Malan was part of the recently-concluded Test series between India and England.
Before the competition was interrupted in the middle, he made his IPL debut with Punjab Kings in their last encounter.

Batting at No. 4 against Delhi Capitals, Malan had scored 26 (26) before getting bowled by Axar Patel. In T20I cricket, Malan has scored 1123 runs in 30 matches, with a high score of 103. He has registered a ton and 11 half-centuries.
