Kolkata : As per reports, Chennai Super Kings owners suggested at meeting in IPL owners -BCCI the reintroduction of an old rule to retain World Cup winning & 5 times IPL winning skipper legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni for IPL 2025 mega auction.
As per the old rule which was prevalent from the period 2008-2021 , if an Indian player has retired for more than 5 years from international Cricket, he will be categorized as “uncapped” in IPL auction panel. However, this rule was scrapped from 2022 till date, at the approval of majority of owners.
CSK management demanded reintroduction of this rule so that they can retain MS Dhoni as “uncapped” Indian player.
This was done to minimize the budget, keeping in mind buying other players who’ll serve long term. In last 2022 Mega auction, Dhoni’s retention costed them INR 4 crores. Therefore, to minimize the cost and get efficient services of Dhoni, CSK management made this demand.
Dhoni who retired from international Cricket on 15th August, 2020 , will complete 5 years being retired in 2025 , & if this rule is reintroduced, Dhoni will fall under “uncapped” category.
However, majority of the franchise were against this decision to reintroduce this rule.
Moreover, the question of Dhoni’s availability in IPL 2025 remains doubtful. The introduction of new auction rules , if any, will be vital factor in this.
