Cape Town: A nostalgic Jasprit Bumrah said he is glad to be back at Newlands and looked back and reminisced about his glorious Test debut back in 2018 at Newlands Cape Town, the same venue where Team India are scheduled to play the final Test match against hosts South Africa from Tuesday.
Cape Town is the same venue where Jasprit Bumrah made his debut in 2018 and picked a total of four wickets. Bumrah finished the series with 14 wickets in three matches at an average of 25.21. He was the second-highest wicket-taker for India in the series and stood behind Mohammed Shami who took 15 wickets.
Bumrah will be returning to the same venue after four years and posted a special Tweet along with a heartfelt note, “Cape Town, January 2018 – is where it all began for me in Test cricket. Four years on, I’ve grown as a player and a person and to return to this ground brings back special memories,” Bumrah tweeted after the team’s first training session at the venue.

Bumrah has become a key bowler for India in Test cricket in the last four years. He has taken 107 wickets in 26 matches at an average of 23.24. Bumrah is currently placed in the ninth position in the ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings with 781 rating points. In September 2019, Bumrah was placed at the third position in the rankings.
Recalling Bumrah’s debut, former India head coach Ravi Shastri had revealed last December that he was determined to unleash the pacer in the South Africa Test series rather than in a series at home.
“He knew. I made Bharat Arun call him up and let him know that be ready. You might just get a call-up. I spoke to Virat, spoke to the selectors. I said not in India… don’t even bring him into the 15 in India. Unleash him straight in South Africa. And coming to Cape Town,” he said on ‘The Ravi Shastri’ Show on Star Sports.
Seeking their first series win in South Africa, India will lock horns with the hosts in the series-deciding third Test here from January 11 to 15.
