Goa: Mumbai City FC continued their struggle as the defending champions lost to Bengaluru FC for 3-0 at the PJN Stadium, Fatorda. The Islanders missed the chance to top the table and managed to get only two points from their last five encounters. However, Marco Pezzaiuoli’s boys are just three points away to notch the qualifying spot for play-offs.

The wall, Gurpreer Singh Sadhu was called into an early action as Cassio Gabriel and Bipin Singh attacked following the kick-off. The Blues took the lead in the 8th minute with a left-foot drive from Danish Farooq from outside the box. Prince Ibara headed in the 23rd minute from the cross of Roshan Naorem. The brilliant close range strike did not made any mistake to find the nets, giving Phurba Lachenpa no chance. The pressure was on the Islanders as the Blues continued to create several scoring opportunities around the second quarter of the match. Ibara scored the second with a high leap from the accurate corner provided by Roshan Naorem in the 45th minute.

The second half was also the same BFC giving constant threat to the Islanders’ defence. But things got better for Mumbai as they got more of possession and created some chances. Sunil Chhetri replaced Ibara but left the pitch with an injury. Five minutes past the hour mark, a long-range volley from Apuia hit the right-sided post and came out. Ajith Kamaraj replaced injured Naorem who was struggling with a muscle issue. The five added minutes for stoppages could not break the BFC defence for the Islanders. The Blues held the well-deserved clean sheet to secure three points with a sensational overall performance.

Bengaluru FC will turn up against ATK Mohun Bagan on Saturday while Mumbai City FC will face off Kerala Blasters FC on Sunday.
