Watford :Watford earned their promotion back to the Premier League on Saturday (April 24) with still games to spare, when they defeated Millwall 1-0 in the (second-tier) Championship match at Vicarage Road. They just missed one season from top tier football.

Ismaila Sarr scored a penalty on 11 minutes which proved decisive enough, as Watford were guaranteed one of the two automatic promotion spots alongside Championship leaders Norwich City, who booked their top-flight spot last weekend.

Xisco Munoz’s side finished second-bottom of the Premier League in the 2019-20 campaign. After a mixed start to the second-division campaign  Munoz was replaced by Vladimir Ivic as manager in December.

Under the Spanish manager Watford secured 17 wins in 24 Championship games, and opened up a 10-point gap over third-placed Brentford, who still have a game in hand. Since 2009-10 no two sides who were relegated the previous year made an instant return to the Premier League. Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion were the last teams to achieve this feat.
