New Delhi: India has suffered another setback as spin-bowling allrounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the five-match Test series against England due to a thumb injury.

Sundar suffered the injury while batting in the first innings for County Select XI against India during the practice match. Before him, Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan have also been ruled out of the series due to injuries. Avesh was also injured while playing for the County Select team.

“Washy has a fractured finger just like Avesh who had a thumb dislocation. Both are out of Test series and will go home,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
“He will also take at least five weeks to start bowling and so no point keeping them here,” the source added.

“Fast bowler Avesh Khan remains under observation of the BCCI Medical Team. He will not be taking any further part on Day 2 and Day 3 of the warm-up game,” BCCI tweeted. The 24-member squad set to England is now down to 21.

The Board didn’t find any replacement yet. “It is too early to talk about replacements. There is still some time and if the situation continues to be bad, then the replacements can be sent so that they are available for the third Test, if not the second,” a source added.
