Aarhus: With the withdrawal of seven countries including Indonesia, the Thomas and Uber Cup is likely to be cancelled, according to reports after a virtual Emergency Council meeting of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Sunday (September 13). BWF is likely to make an announcement soon.
The withdrawal of top-seeded Indonesia had made all the difference. Indonesia have won the Thomas Cup 13 times and the Uber Cup three times. Other teams who have also pulled out from the tournament are South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Australia.
On Sunday, celebrated Indian shuttler, Saina Nehwal questioned BWF’s decision to conduct the tournament during the pandemic. India’s proposed preparatory camp for the Thomas and Uber Cup in Hyderabad also got cancelled after the players refused to accept the quarantine conditions set by the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

Top teams like China and Japan are also mulling to withdraw from the tournament. BWF tried to save the event by including Finland and Sweden, but they were not seen as the top-ranked teams, therefore it was not enough. It will be for the third time, the tournament will get postponed. The tournament was first slotted for May 16-24 and then it was moved to August 15-23 before the October date.
