Ahmedabad: The newly reconstructed Sardar Patel Stadium aka the Motera will unfold another glorious chapter in Indian cricket as the world’s largest cricket arena. The stadium has been renamed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was also formerly a president of the Gujarat Cricket Association.

President Ram Nath Kovin inaugurated the renovated arena. Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, along with BCCI secretary Jay Shah, were also present at the event.

“This stadium was conceptualised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was president of the Gujarat Cricket Association at that time. This stadium is an example of eco-friendly development,” Kovind said after the inauguration.

“I am confident that this enclave will give a new global identity to Ahmedabad in terms of world-class sports infrastructure, and the facilities here will help players to perform better,” he added. “We have decided to name it after the country’s Prime Minister. It was Modi ji’s dream project,” said Shah after the inauguration.

The stadium opened with the third Test between India and England, a day-night game from Wednesday and will also host the fourth and final game of the series from March 4. The 1,10,000 capacity stadium is the biggest cricketing venue in the world, surpassing the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia.
The stadium has 11 pitches being made using red soil and black soil. It is the only stadium in the world to have the same soil surfaces for the main & practice pitches. Gujarat Cricket Association Joint Secretary Anil Patel had asserted that the Sardar Patel Stadium is also the only stadium in the world with four dressing rooms for the players.
