Merseyside: A couple of strikes from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson propelled a brave Everton to seal 2-0 victory over cross-town rivals Liverpool in the Premier League. Liverpool failed to finish off their chances as the toffees ended their 24game winless streak at the Anfield in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday(February 20).

Jurgen Klopp’s men lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Ozan Kabak being paired with skipper Jordan Henderson at the heart of the defence. Thiago Alcantara along with Georginio Wijnaldum and Curtis Jones formed a midfield trident. Roberto Firmino shared the forward line alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

The Reds got hit early. James Rodriguez set-up Richarlison for the opening strike with a pin-point line breaking through ball and Everton no.7 struck it past Allison.

Despite seeing much of the ball, the hosts struggled to take on the opposing defence. Alexander-Arnold and Henderson went close in the first half but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford came to rescue for the visitors.

Everton were quite brave through-out the game going toe to toe against a much superior side especially when breaking down the play while both Rodriguez and full-back Lucas Digne were excellent.

Sigurdsson sealed the deal for his side converting his spot-kick after Dominic Calvert-Lewin was taken down in the box by Alexander-Arnold. A rather frustrating campaign for the defending champions continues as they now stand at sixth in the points table.
