Manchester: Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has been attracting a few criticisms over the last few weeks after a stint of not-so-well performance. This time, former United midfielder Paul Scholes has come up raising his concern about De Gea’s performance not being up to the mark labeling him as a weak link for the Red Devils.
“Yeah, not good enough,” stated Paul, “We mentioned it before the game, I think that is the biggest weakness in this team. The Spaniard had a rather shaky outing in the last game against Newcastle United and although his side took full three-points, but were unable to keep a clean sheet.
Scholes was critical about his ability to handle the corners. “David again, so sloppy, it’s becoming a real problem, having the confidence in your goalkeeper, and short corners, United had one out for two or three corners, this is the one where David again, can you catch that? He punches it into a really bad area,” he said.
Besides that, the former England International also raised his concern about the lack of quality at the back. ”I said before the game I think that they’re missing a real dominant centre-back. You look back at the history of the teams that win leagues, they have real leaders in the back four,” he added.
“I think Maguire possibly could be but I think they need somebody with him who could be really dominant in that position, really commanding, can bully a centre-forward, can demand from the rest of the squad around him on and off the pitch as well. I just think they’re missing that.”
United moved back to the second spot in the table 10 points behind league leaders Manchester City. With 13 games to spare, Ole Gunner Solksjaer needs to buckle up if they want to challenge their noisy neighbors for the title.
