London: During the last day of the transfer window Monday (October 5), the most shocking news that surfaced was Arsenal sacking their loyal Gunnersaurus stating his service is no longer required. Jerry Quy, the guy who portrayed as Gunnersaurus for the past 26 years was made redundant as a part of the club’s cost-cutting schemes.

In August, when all the clubs were hit badly by the coronavirus pandemic, Arsenal announced they could make almost 55 roles redundant in order to stabilise the club financially. Gunnersaurus was one of those unfortunate 55.

This news was not taken positively by football fans around the world. Irrespective of the clubs, football fans all over the world came together to highly criticise the decision taken by the club management.

Although Gunnersaurus’ salary was not revealed, fans didn’t wait to hit back and said whatever might have been the salary, it clearly was less than what Mesut Ozil gets paid, just for watching Arsenal play on television.

That is when Ozil came to the rescue of the loyal man who served his team for so many years and decided to reimburse the entire salary of the mascot as long as he remains the player of Arsenal.

He tweeted, “I was so sad that Jerry Quy aka our famous & loyal mascot Gunnersaurus and integral part of our club was being made redundant after 27 years. As such, I’m offering to reimburse Arsenal with the full salary of our big green guy.”
