Hamilton: Veteran India pacer Jhulan Goswami on Saturday surpassed the 34-year record of 39 wickets by former Australia cricketer Lyn Fullston to become the highest wicket-taker in the Women’s World Cup history.

Jhulan accomplished the feat at Seddon Park in Hamilton during a match against the West Indies by taking the wicket of Anisa Mohammed which took her tally of World Cup wickets to 40. She bowled a fuller-length delivery to Mohammed who chipped it towards short mid where Taniya Bhatia took a tumbling catch to complete the dismissal.

This was Jhulan’s 31st Women’s World Cup match. The 39-year-old pacer is presently playing in her sixth Women’s ODI World Cup, having previously participated in the tournament in 2005, 2009, 2013, and 2017. She made her World Cup debut against Sri Lanka in the 2005 Women’s World Cup in Pretoria, where she bowled out Inoka Galagedara for her first wicket and finished as the tournament’s third-highest wicket-taker with 13 wickets.

India won their second match of the tournament on Saturday, defeating the West Indies by 155 runs.
