Donny Van de Beek cancels out Sergio Canales’ opener as the Dutch hold Spain

Amsterdam: Donny Van De Beek scored a second-half equaliser as the Netherlands played out a 1-1 draw against Spain in an international friendly at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam on Thursday (November 12). Sergio Canales scored for the Spanish.

Coach Luis Enrique set up his side in a 4-4-2 formation with Inigo Martinez and Eric Garcia at the heart of the defence. Hector Bellerin got a call-up to replace injured full-back, Jesus Navas. Canales along with Marco Asensio completed a four-man midfield while the pairing of Alvaro Morata and Gerard Moreno sharing the frontline.

Spain looked good from the word go, kept the ball keeping possession and built up patiently. It eventually led to break the deadlock when Alvaro Morata’s through ball found Canales and the Real Betis forward slotted it past Dutch goalkeeper Marco Bizot with a sharp low finish in the 18th minute.

In the second half, the Dutch equalised with Van De Beek getting a free ball due to a defensive error by Spanish defenders, drilling it past the goalie Unai Simon. After that, the home side started to show intent especially Memphis Depay who looked good. Sergio Ramos came out for his 176th appearance for the La Roja equaling a European record held by Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon. In the end, both the teams had satisfy themselves with a draw.
