Kolkata : Former Brazilian World Cup winner Lucio has been hospitalized with intensive care after suffering burns in multiple body parts.
Lucio, the former Brazilian captain was also with FC Goa in Indian Super League (ISL) as marquee player is being hospitalized at Brazilia following a domestic accident at home, where he sustained burns.
In a statement, the facility said Lucio was ‘stable, conscious, and under constant observation.’
The extent and cause of his injuries have not been disclosed.
Lucio’s wife, Marilia Forgiarini, told Brazilian media O Globo that the burns were caused by “the explosion of an ecological chimney” running on bioethanol.
The 47 years old retired from football in 2019, is best known for anchoring the Brazil defence during their victorious 2002 World Cup campaign and starring in Inter Milan’s historic treble-winning side under Jose Mourinho in 2010.
A powerful centre back with a commanding presence, Lucio enjoyed a glittering career in both Europe and South America, representing clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Inter and briefly Juventus before returning to Brazil, where he turned out for Sao Paulo and Palmeiras among others. He also captained FC Goa to 2015 ISL final.
