Manchester: Manchester City defeated Brentford by 2-0 in English Premier League on Thursday ( January 10) at Etihad Stadium. A couple of late goals helped Southampton clinch a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on the same day.

Pep Guardiola’s men extended their lead to 12 points over Liverpool, and are comfortably sitting at the top of the table with the trophy at near sight. Although Liverpool had played two matches less than City. Riyad Mahrez and Kevin de Bruyne scored a goal each for the Citizen.

Mahrez gave City the lead just before the end of the first half from the penalty spot. The referee awarded the penalty when Raheem Sterling was fouled in the area by Mads Roerslev. On 69 minutes the Belgian midfielder doubled the lead for the Pep Guardiola’s men hence guiding the team to victory.

Spurs were ridiculed by Southampton as they scored twice in the final 11 minutes to snatch a victory away from them. Tottenham took the lead through their own goal from Jan Bednarek. Although within just four minutes, Armando Broja equalized.

Son Heung Min put the host back in lead but two late goals from Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams shocked Spurs. The final attempt of Steven Bergwijn to earn a point for his team was ruled off by VAR. With the defeat, Spurs are now currently in seventh place, three places away from UEFA Champions League qualification.
