Napoli: Lazio forward Ciro Immobile has equalled the record of scoring most number of goals in a single Serie A season when he was on target in his side’s 1-3 loss to Napoli. The 30-year-old took his record goals tally to 36 same as Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain who did it in 2015-16 season playing for Napoli.

Ciro’s count also won him the 2019-2020 European Golden Shoe trophy overtaking Bayern Munich Robert Lewandowski (34 goals). Fourteen of his goals were from the penalty spot, as Lazio finished the season in fourth place, earning a return to the Champions League.

It is the third time Ciro has won the title of best scorer in Italy after 2013-14, when he scored 22 goals with Torino, and in 2017-18 when his 29 goals for Lazio saw him share the honour with Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi. His goal count this season is also five more than Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Dreams do come true,” Ciro said. Juventus had already wrapped up their ninth straight league title and are looking towards their last 16 home game against Lyon next Friday when Maurizio Sarri’s side need to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit.
