Madrid: Three Spanish clubs – Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao have been hit with the allegations of trying to hinder the prospect of growth of other Spanish clubs after they pulled out of agreeing to the La Liga- CVC deal.
“La Liga now has the support for the agreement from 39 of the 42 clubs that make up the league. We will continue working with CVC on this project, which we are confident is good for LaLiga and the clubs.” said a spokesperson for the League.
“The challenge announced [on Friday] demonstrates that these three clubs are attempting to prevent growth for the other clubs in the league. ” he added.
The league had decided to sell 10% of it to investment fund CVC that would see economical uphill if the deal goes through. 38 of 42 teams voted for the deal while Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao along with a second division club Real Oviedo were against it, although the latter changed their mind and uplifted the veto.
The three first division clubs had previously released a statement saying :
“FC Barcelona, Athletic Club and Real Madrid CF announce that they have challenged the agreement adopted by the La Liga Assembly on Aug. 12, relating to the operation between La Liga and CVC, as it is an agreement that infringes the applicable rules set out (and in particular, amongst others, the Royal Decree Law 5/2015), and it was adopted as part of a highly irregular and disrespectful process toward with the minimum guarantees required to those purposes, especially faced with an operation of such importance and longevity.”
The vetoes saw the estimation of the deal fall from £2.7Billion to £2.1billion that is to be shared between the 39 clubs. The result garnered a lot of criticism from the officials as well.
“It is surprising they are challenging something that does not actually affect them,” the league spokesman told ESPN. “They would only benefit from the growth of La Liga in the coming years.
“La Liga now has the support for the agreement from 39 of the 42 clubs that make up the league. We will continue working with CVC on this project, which we are confident is good for LaLiga and the clubs.
“The challenge announced [on Friday] demonstrates that these three clubs are attempting to prevent growth for the other clubs in the league.
“Madrid nearly always challenges La Liga’s efforts to grow the league and has a history of challenging the league in court. We as La Liga will always and continue to defend the interests of the majority of clubs.”
