Kolkata: Super Sunday. The term itself holds a major significance no matter what awaits us on that particular day. And if you love sports, spare me saying you are spoilt for choices. October 24, 2021, is one such day – a Super Sunday.
With all sporting actions back to work following the COVID-19 pandemic, the sports fraternity is in for a treat as some very high-voltage fixtures in the upcoming months. But why is October 24 tagged as Super Sunday?
The fourth Sunday of October will host an array of important matches ranging from the T20 World Cup to the English Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1. To start with, the date will see the first El Clasico of the season when Barcelona host Real Madrid at Camp Nou.
It will also mark the first Clasico in close to two decades without Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo. While Ronaldo exited from Real Madrid a long time back, Messi and Ramos (one of Real Madrid’s longest-serving players) made their way to Ligue 1 recently. With none of the big trio, it will be interesting to see who steps up on the day.

Moving Ligue 1, the talk of the town, Paris Saint-Germain will fly out to face Olympique de Marseille on the very same day at Stade Vélodrome in a league game. With the likes of Messi, Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi and Georginio Wijnaldum — all under the same roof, a star-studded PSG will attract everyone in the world.
Next up is the battle between two champions in Serie A as Juventus face Inter Milan on the same night. With the title gone to Inter Milan last season, Juventus will be looking to assert their supremacy once again with Cristiano Ronaldo leading from the front.
Moving approximately 1,984km from Italy to England, two of the world’s biggest clubs — Manchester United and Liverpool will be locking horns in the Premier League renewing their age-old rivalry that will keep viewers glued to the screen. While Manchester United finished second last season, the Reds ended third.
Last but not the least, the day will see India take on arch-rivals Pakistan in the blockbuster fixture at the men’s T20 World Cup in Dubai. Drawn in the same Group 2 in the Super 12 stage, both the teams will open their campaign with the fixture.
Mark your calendars, save the date!
