New Delhi: Two-time Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar, who is currently in Tihar jail in connection with the death of Sagar Rana in the Chhatrasal Stadium brawl, will be allowed to watch the Tokyo Olympics in the common area of his ward.
The decision comes after, Sushil on July 2, asked the prison authorities to provide him a television through his advocate in order to watch the wrestling matches during the Tokyo Olympics. India will be represented by seven (male and female) wrestlers at the Tokyo Olympics which begins on July 23.
“We have allowed Sushil Kumar to watch television in the common area of his ward along with others since the Olympics is set to begin from tomorrow,” Director General (Delhi Prisons) Sandeep Goel said on Thursday. “He has made a request through his lawyer for a TV to stay updated about wrestling matches and other happenings.”
The tainted wrestler was arrested along with Ajay Kumar on May 23 from outer Delhi’s Mundka area after several days of hiding. It is being alleged that Sushil and his associates have beaten up Sagar and his friends Sonu and Amit Kumar on May 5 over a property dispute. Sagar died later.
Sushil is facing charges of murder, culpable homicide and kidnapping and was shifted to Tihar jail from Mandoli jail where he was lodged earlier. The Delhi court had earlier rejected Sushil’s plea for special food and supplements inside the prison. The police stated they are not ‘essential need or necessity’.
