Suresh Raina writes to DGP, wants to promote cricket in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has expressed his interest in scouting and training young, talented cricketers from the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Sports will not only help youngsters mould their careers but also improve their lifestyle, Raina said.

In a letter addressed to Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Dilbag Singh, Raina wrote, “I write this letter with much hope and expectation to start and promote cricket and thus provide an opportunity for  underprivileged children from the  state of Jammu & Kashmir to shape their careers in cricket.”

“He would use this opportunity to contribute to the national team. He added it would require a lot of effort and processes like scouting from the educational institutions of rural areas in the union territory and conducting courses for mental toughness, physical fitness and skill training.”

He also said that training in any type of sports will teach youngsters the discipline and it will maintain their physical and mental fitness and they are willing to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

“Cricket is not just a sport, it evolves as a process and could shape and mould a group of individuals with professional ethics and discipline that can be maintained further into life, staying fit and healthy both mentally and physically When a child undergoes the training for any sports activities he or she is automatically adapted to the discipline of lifestyle as well as aware of the importance of physical fitness. These could be the future of our nation,” the letter read.

On August 22 (Saturday), the Jammu and Kashmir Police had invited Raina to develop cricketing skills in the union territory. In a tweet on their official Twitter handle, the J&K police said, “Congratulation on a successful career @ImRaina. Your contribution to Indian #Cricket, particularly the shorter format is a matter of pride for all of us. Some of your crucial innings which helped #India win many encounters on the play field are memorable.”
