Madrid: Veteran Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has signed a contract extension with the La Liga giants that will keep him until 2023, the Spaniard announced on Friday. The French forward’s contract was going to expire next summer, but after captain Sergio Ramos’ exit to Paris Saint-Germain, the club quickly ensured the same does not happen to their star No.9.

“The story continues for me at the greatest club in the world, What an honour to be here today, thank you for trusting me over the years,” the Frenchman said. The 33-year-old forward arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu back in 2009 from Lyon aged just 21. Over the course of the last decade, Benzema became one of the standout players for the Los Blancos appearing 560 times for them scoring 281 goals.

So far, Benzema has four Champions League titles, three La Liga crowns as well as four FIFA Club World Cup titles in his locker making a fearsome duo up front with Cristiano Ronaldo. After the Portuguese left in 2018, Benzema has been the man to go for Real Madrid.

He also returned to the France national team in the summer donning the Les Bleus shirt in the Euro 2020. Benzema had a superb campaign last season netting 30 times in 46 games as well as registering nine assists and was voted La Liga Player of the Year maintaining his allround attacking endeavor.

Benzema started this season in fine fashion too scoring a double in the opener against Alaves last weekend.
