India's Kamalpreet Kaur finishes sixth in women's discuss throw final at Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo: India’s Kamalpreet Kaur finished a deserving sixth at the Tokyo Olympics in the women’s discus throw final on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium. The 23-year-old, making her Olympics debut, threw a best of 63.70m to finish just outside the top five.

Kamalpreet, who became the first Indian to qualify for an athletics event final in history, started with a 61.62m throw. She missed on a second before bettering her first attempt by 2.08m. The event was halted for few minutes because of the rain leaving the launching area slippery for the athletes.

With Kamalpreet finishing sixth after a series of three attempts, she got three more attempts for a shot in history. The top eight in the field of 12 get another three more attempts in the final.

However, Kamalpreet couldn’t change her fortunes much as her final three throws yielded no show, 61.37m, no show to finish at where she was. Earlier, the Indian threw 64m to finish second during the qualification round and qualify for the final.

American Valarie Allman took the gold with a monstrous 68.98m which she threw in her very first attempt. Germany’s Kristin Pudenz settled for silver with a personal best of 66.86m while the bronze was taken by Cuban Yaime Perez.
