I’ve every right to help a younger player: Sourav Ganguly hits back at critics

Dubai: The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Tuesday (September 29) hit back at the critics for their assumed conflict of interest labeled against him. The argument was pulled after Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer spoke about the contributions of head coach Ricky Ponting and Ganguly (Delhi Capitals mentor in 2019), both of whom helped him progress as a successful player and captain.

The former India captain explained and defended himself by stating that he has every right to guide any younger player, after having played close to 500 international matches. “I had helped him (Iyer) last year. I may be the Board president, but don’t forget that I’ve played 500 matches (424 matches) for India, so I can speak to a young player and help him, be it Shreyas Iyer or Virat Kohli. If they want help, I can,” Ganguly said during a promotional event.

“As a young captain, I am thankful to Ricky and Dada for being a part of my journey as a cricketer and captain last season. My comment yesterday (September 20) was to emphasise my gratitude towards the role they both have played in my personal growth as a captain,” Iyer had tweeted.

Delhi Capitals will be again seen in action on October 3 in Sharjah against Kolkata Knight Riders.
