Goa : Mumbai City FC beat FC Goa in a penalty shootout after the second leg of the first semi-final ended 0-0 after 90 minutes and after extra time. They beat Goa, 6-5 in the shootout and now have the chance to make a double by winning the Hero Indian Super League.
This match was a make-or-break situation for both teams as the first leg ended, 2-2 leaving no advantage for either of the sides.
Goa didn’t start with Igor Angulo on Monday who has been their top goal-scorer, also Mumbai benched Bartholomew Ogbeche and started with Hernan Santana.
To be fair Goa had the fair amount of chances in the 90 minutes. Jorge Ortiz came close twice to open the scoring, and Ishan Pandita too. Mumbai didn’t have a single shot on goal throughout the match and were struggling to open up the Goan defence. The best chance came for them in the 90th minute mark when James Donachie missed a free header inside box.
The extra-time was much of a stalemate and the match went to a tie-breaker. The penalty shootout is always a dicey situation to be fair and it was one of the most entertaining shoot-outs in the history of ISL and Mumbai came up triumphs with the goal from Rowllin Borges. Mumbai would face winners either ATK Mohun Bagan and NorthEast United FC in the final on Saturday at the Fatorda.
