Mumbai: In their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday, Royal Challengers Bangalore suffered their biggest defeat.

The Faf du Plessis-led team had a huge collapse after being asked into bat by Kane Williamson, eventually getting bowled out for 68 in 16.1 overs, RCB’s second lowest title in the league.

The Sunrisers then chased down the 69-run goal in 48 balls to win by nine wickets and move into second place on the points table, leaving RCB in the dust with its worst defeat (by balls remaining, 72) in the tournament’s 15 editions. The Sunrisers’ victory in just eight overs is also the fourth-fastest in IPL history in a run chase.

In 2021, RCB was thrashed by the Kolkata Knight Riders, who chased down the opposition’s 92-run total with 60 balls to spare.

RCB achieved the dubious feat on a day when they had scored the lowest total in IPL history (49) against KKR in the 2017 tournament. On the same day in 2013, RCB also had the highest team total (263/5).

Gujarat Titans continued to find a way to win on the same day, and with their sixth win of the IPL 2022, the Hardik Pandya-led team recaptured first place in the points standings. After being confined to a below-par 156/7 after a late collapse, the GT pacers stepped up and locked down Kolkata Knight Riders with consistent strikes, eventually limiting them to 148/8 for a narrow eight-run triumph at the DY Patil Stadium on Saturday.

KKR never looked like they were in the hunt until Andre Russell started smoking sixes for fun late in the game, but even his blitz couldn’t save the two-time champions from losing for the fourth time in five games. Russell’s 25-ball 48 kept them in the game, but the GT bowlers held their nerves in the end.

The only redeeming grace in GT’s dismal batting performance was captain Hardik Pandya’s third fifty of the season, as they posted a below-par 156/9. As a precaution, the Titans skipper missed the last game and looked rusty despite scoring 67 off 49 balls with four boundaries and two sixes.

Pandya not only smashed boundaries, but also singles and doubles to keep the scoreboard ticking. He strained his hamstring trying to get a quick single and was ejected for attempting to hit his way out of trouble.
