New Delhi: Delhi Capitals (DC) announced on Tuesday (August 18) the signing of South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje, as a replacement for England all-rounder Chris Woakes in 13th edition of IPL which is scheduled to held in the UAE from September 19 to November 10.

Nortje made his Test debut for South Africa in 2019 against India. Till date, he has played 6 Test matches, 7 ODIs and 3 T20Is. In July 2020, he was named the newcomer of the year at Cricket South Africa’s annual awards ceremony.

Earlier, Nortje was with Kolkata Knight Riders in last season, he missed out playing in 2019 because of his shoulder injury. On joining Delhi Capitals, the right-arm pacer expressed his excitement to be a part of DC, “I am excited to join the Delhi Capitals, a team that was the talk of the tournament last season,” he said.

“With its exciting mix of experienced and young players, and a stellar coaching line up, there is no doubt this is going to be a massive learning experience for me. I am grateful to the Delhi Capitals management for giving me this opportunity,” he added.

Woakes made his Test match debut against Australia in the fifth Ashes Test in 2013. In the 2020 IPL auction, he was bought by the Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL). He had earlier stated about his discontinuation in IPL from this season, which was previously planned to be held on March 30, ‘to prolong his England career’.

“I just feel like I’d been on a bit of a treadmill and I needed to get off for a bit of a breather. From a mental point of view it’s about recharging those batteries,” Woakes said. “The IPL is great but I’ve been there and done it. That’s not to say I don’t want to do it again but at this moment England is the most important thing to me, as well as spending time at home with the family where I can.”
