Abu Dhabi: Mumbai Indians won their fourth match on the trot as they beat Delhi Capitals by five wickets in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday (October 10).
Chasing a target of 163 Mumbai started well with Quinton de Kock taking the charge but skipper Rohit Sharma had a struggled outing and got out for just five. De kock kept his aggressive nature going and brought up his fifty but got out soon after going for a hit off a Ravichandran Ashwin delivery.
Suryakumar Yadav also played a gem of a knock but got dismissed going for a hit off Kagiso Rabada for a well made 53. Hardik Pandya who many hoped to make his birthday memorable got out for a duck.
It looked like an opening for Delhi to which they can clinch on but Mumbai’s batsmen held their nerves even the game went into the final over. Rabada’s inspiring bowling figures 2/28 in overs was unable to take Delhi home. Krunal Pandya hit a couple of boundaries in the penultimate over to get Mumbai over the line.
Earlier, it was however Shreyas Iyer who won the toss and opted to bat. Opener Prithvi Shaw went home early, Ajinkya Rahane got his first chance in this season but failed to capitalise and got out for run-a-ball 15. Iyer along with Shikhar Dhawan started reconstructing the innings with the former particularly looking good but got out playing over mid-wicket of a Krunafinding Trent Boult who took a clean catch. Marcus Stoinis followed him soon for just 13.
Dhawan completed his fifty but despite being not-out he failed to accelerate in the later half of the innings largely due to the two talisman of Mumbai, Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah who stuck to the basics making sure the batsmen don’t open their arms. Bumrah showed the world again what he is capable of and why he is considered such a reliable bowler in these death overs. In the end, Delhi took the score to a respectable 162/4 in 20 overs.
Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 162/4 (Shikhar Dhawan 69*, Shreyas Iyer 42; Krunal Pandya 4-0-26-2) lost to Mumbai Indians 166/5 (Quinton de Kock 53, Surya Kumar Yadav 3; Kagiso Rabada 4-0-28-2) by five wickets.
