
Nagpur: India defeated England by 4 Wickets at Vidharba Stadium, Nagpur, in 1st ODI. Shubman Gill (87), Shreyas Iyer (59), Axar Patel (52) powered India to take 1-0 lead. This match also had 2 debutants from India’s side – Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harshit Rana.
India being put to bowl first saw English keeper Phil Salt (43) and Ben Duckett (32) starting off the innings in fine fashion with 75 runs opening stand. This included a 26 runs over off debutant Harshit Rana. However, Salt’s run out gave an opening to India and Rana bagged 2 more wickets of Duckett and Harry Brook.
English skipper Jos Buttler (52) & Jacob Bethell (51) notched up vital 59 runs partnership when they’re struggling at 111-4 (18.3). Even after Buttler’s dismissal, Bethell continued to fight till end.
Ravindra Jadeja (3/26) & Rana (3/53) picked 3-fers to bundled England on 248 (47.4).
India chasing 249 runs, lost debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (15) & skipper Rohit Sharma (2) early for 19 runs.
Shubman Gill (87) & Shreyas Iyer (59) notched up vital 94 runs partnership, taking off pressure from Indian Batting lineup.
Gill, with 14 boundaries, went on to build match winning 108 runs partnership with Axar Patel (52), who with aggressive note put English bowlers on backfoot.
Nearing the target, India lost 3 quick wickets of Axar, KL Rahul (2) & Gill, but Hardik Pandya (9*) & Jadeja (12*); hitting the winning runs guided India past the target in 38.4 overs, despite the last minute dramatic mini collapse.
Both teams will face each other on February 9, 2025 at Cuttack.
Gill was adjourned man of the match for his heroic knock.
