Antigua: An Olympic gold in 1948 and now a U-19 World Cup winners’ medal in 2022, the Bawa family in Chandigarh couldn’t have asked for more.

If Tarlochan Singh Bawa scored in India’s 4-0 demolition of Great Britain in the final at the Wembley Stadium 74 years back, his grandson’s Raj Angad Bawa’s 5/31 and a crucial 35 broke England’s hearts en route to India’s record-extending fifth ICC Men’s U-19 World Cup title at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Saturday.

In the process, Raj Angad broke several records. The 19-year-old became the first Indian and second overall to take a five-wicket haul at an U-19 World Cup final. He also equalled legendary and 1983 World Cup-winning Indian captain Kapil Dev in scoring a 150-plus knock and taking a fifer in a single ICC event.

Kapil Dev had achieved the feat when he led India to victory in the 1983 World Cup beating West Indies in the final at Lord’s. The only other to take a fifer at an U-19 World Cup final was Anwar Ali from Pakistan in the 2006 when he took 5/35 against India.

Raj Angad Bawa also ended the tournament as the second highest run-getter and third highest-wicket taker for India. He scored 252 runs, that included a record-breaking 162 not out against Uganda in the ground stages. He got nine wickets in the competition.

Raj Angad Bawa also surpassed his seniors Piyush Chawla, Ravi Bishnoi, and Sandeep Sharma who had previously taken a four-wicket haul in an ICC U-19 World Cup final.
