Narail: Mashrafe Mortaza, a former Bangladesh cricketer and one of the country’s most successful captains, has condemned the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.

“I saw two defeats yesterday, one for the Bangladesh cricket team which hurt me, and another for the whole of Bangladesh which has broken my heart,” Mortaza posted on his official Facebook page.

On the 13th of October, communal violence against the minority Hindus in Bangladesh erupted, leaving at least six people dead and hundreds injured in a Durga Puja pavilion in Cumilla bordering Chandpur and about 100 km from Dhaka, leading to the deployment of paramilitary forces in more than half of administrative districts.

The next day, when an ISKCON temple was vandalized and a devotee was slain by a crowd, things got much worse. Several incidences of unidentified Muslim individuals attacking minority populations’ houses of worship have been recorded across the country.

Hindu temples and shops in Feni, some 157 kilometers from Dhaka, were vandalized again on Sunday, according to local media sources. The fights erupted after an attack on demonstrators who were protesting attacks on Durga Puja locations around Bangladesh, according to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper.

As a result of these attacks, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has announced a hunger strike beginning on October 23rd to condemn the atrocities.
