Carabao Cup: Manchester United see early exit; Chelsea, Tottenham squeeze through

Manchester: Machester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday as West Ham got revenge for their league loss of last Sunday by claiming victory 1-0 at the Old Trafford. Manuel Lanzini was sole scorer in the ninth minute after Ryan Fredericks bamboozled Jadon Sancho and Alex Telles before cutting a low cross back to the Argentine, who finished into the bottom corner. The hosts had plenty of chances through-out game but were unable find any opening with Juan Mata going as close as rattling the bar. West Ham exposed Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s in the later parts of the game. Towards final few minutes, the visitors should have wrapped up victory,However, Andriy Yarmolenko, Mark Noble and Jarrod Bowen all failed to hit the target. In the end though, it didn’t matter as claimed a narrow win.

Arsenal on the other hand, had a sweeter evening at the Emirates Stadium  registering a 3-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon. Alexandre Lacazette’s 11th-minute penalty gave the hosts early edge but were held at bay for a while. The gunners no.9  set Smith Rowe up to score from close range midway through the second-half.  Edward Nketiah put the icing on the cake shortly after that producing an audacious flick . Wimbledon performed fairly well despite the scoreline but it was Arsenal who left their home ground with smiles.

Meanwhile Arsenal’s cross town rivals Chelsea had to dig deep to see them through via penalty shootout(5-4) against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.  The game held on 1-1 till 90 minutes after Cameron Archer headed home in the 64th minute to deny “The Blues” lead given by Timo Werner’s header 10 minutes prior to that. Villa stretched the game to the uncertainty of shoot-out. It looked all-over for the visitors after Ashley Young and Marvelous Nakamba missed kick but were given a lifeline with Ben Chilwell missing one for Chelsea  but Thomas Tuchel’s side had the final say with successful spot-kicks from Romelu Lukaku,Mason Mount,Ross Barkley and Reece James.

London saw another penalty shoot-out as Tottengam Hotspur edged past Wolverhampton Wanderers (3-2) away Molineux Stadium after game ended with 2-2 scoreline. Tanguy Ndombele struck one past Wolves goalie John Ruddy early in the game before Harry Kane  doubled the lead short after that. Leander Dendoncker gave lifeline to the host with a clean header in 38th munte with Daniel Podence completing comeback midway through the second-half. Dendoncker  despite bringing his side back to the game was unable see his side through missing his spot kick in the shoot-out alongside Rúben Neves, and Conor Coady. Woleves had slight hope after Ruddy stopped Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s effort but Coady’s miss proved decisive after Kane, Sergio Reguilon  and Bryan Gil found their target to get Spurs over the line
