T20 World Cup 2021: Lockie Ferguson ruled out of New Zealand's T20 WC due to calf tear

Dubai: New Zealand were dealt a big blow as in-form fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup  with a calf tear. The 30-year-old has been replaced in the 15-man-squad by Adam Milne.

Ferguson had complained of tightness in his calf after training, and when the scans were done, it was revealed that the pacer had suffered a grade two tear and will be out of action for at least 4 weeks.

“Ferguson felt tightness in his right calf following training last night (Tuesday) and a subsequent MRI scan on game-day revealed a grade two tear which would require three to four weeks recovery,” New Zealand Cricket informed through a press release.

“It’s a real shame for Lockie to have this happen on the eve of the tournament and the entire team is really feeling for him right now,” head coach Gary Stead said.

“He’s a massive part of our T20 side and has been in such good form – so to lose him at this time is a blow. However, we are fortunate to have a like for like replacement in the form of Adam Milne who has been with the squad training for the past two weeks.” Stead added.

Lockie Ferguson has played 13 T20I matches for the New Zealand side. The 30-year-old has picked up 24 wickets in the T20I format of the game. Ferguson has also picked up a five-wicket haul in T20I cricket.

Adam Milne, who travelled to the UAE as injury cover, is expected to take his place in the 15-man squad. New Zealand will kick-start their tournament opener against Pakistan on October 26.
