Kolkata: Spain women’s national basketball team beat Australia women’s national basketball team 89–66 in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin on September 10, 2026. Spain won the game and advanced to the semifinals, while Australia was defeated.
Spain played well to dominate Australia and win by a large margin of 23 points. Leading scorers for Spain were Megan DiLeo with 16 points and Iyana Carrion with 14 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists. Alicia Flórez was the MVP of the match. Flórez’s all-round contribution 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists was especially valuable in Spain’s balanced team performance.
For Australia, Stephanie Talbot scored 11 points, 11 Rebounds and 7 assists, while Chloe Bibi scored 13 points 3 Rebounds and 2 assists. Ally Wilson also had 13 points for Australia. Stephanie Reid had 11 points, 2 Rebounds and 4 assists. However, Australia were unable to repeat the form they had shown in their thrilling win against Italy to qualify for the World Cup.
The result was a particularly impressive one for Spain, coming off the back of injury problems for Australia. They had entered the tournament without Alanna Smith, who had been injured earlier in the competition, and had just seen Ezi Magbegor forced to withdraw with a serious knee injury after scoring 25 points in their 82–80 win against Italy. Magbegor suffered an ACL tear.
After entering the knockout rounds with a surprise loss to Mali in the group stage, Spain bounced back to finish top of their group and meet one of their main rivals in the quarter-finals. They delivered a composed display to reach the last four of this year’s FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
Spain move into the World Cup semifinals, where they will face the United States. Australia finish their campaign in the quarter-finals after reaching the knockout stage despite significant injuries.
