Kolkata : In a major turnaround in CFL 2026, United Sports Club have halted East Bengal for a 0-0 goalless draw at East Bengal Ground, Kolkata to dent Super 6 path.
Defending champion East Bengal came into Super 6 topping Group 1 with 8 wins in 11 games and 3 draws. United SC on other hand, finished Group 2 stage at 3rd place with 6 wins, 2 draws, 3 losses in 11 games.
It is also to be noted that in last CFL season, East Bengal defeated United SC 2-1 in final to clinch their 41st title. The game was almost like a rematch at an important stage, as this year, the teams didn’t carry points from group stage and the top team in Super 6 points table will win the league.
Despite aggressive and good defensive display throughout the game, neither team scored for 90 minutes. In form East Bengal could not trespass Lal Kamal Bhowmick coached United SC defense. Even United goalkeeper and skipper Sourav Samanta stood tall like a pillar blocking every attacks and shorts.
Crosses, long-range shots were repeatedly blocked. East Bengal also got set pieces just outside the box on several occasions. But East Bengal attack could not overcome the United defenders.
East Bengal Coach Archisman Bhattacharya also made several changes in the second half. But ultimately in form couldn’t break United SC defense and goalkeeper.
Ultimately the game ended with 0-0 scoreline. East Bengal lost crucial 3 points playing at home ground in their opening encounter of CFL 2026 Super 6 round. Provided their other Bengal rivals Mohun Bagan SG won 5-1 against Coal India and Mohammedan SC clinched 2-0 over Bhawanipore FC, East Bengal will now have to score more amount of goals besides winning games and hope Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan get halted by other teams.
