Rio Ferdinand claims Cristiano Ronaldo to have to compete for set pieces

Manchester: Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand answered a much coveted  question upon the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo. CR7,who has been always keen on taking spot kicks, replace Bruno Fernandes who has been a prolific scorer from set pieces for United for some time now. Ferdinand affirmed that although Bruno might give up the spot kicks, Ronaldo would have to compete him for the freekicks given the impressive record Bruno has of scoring them.

“I think Bruno gives up penalties but doesn’t relinquish free-kicks and corners,” the former Red Devils defender said on his FIVE YouTube channel. “The free-kicks around the box, he’s going to be on them I think. I think his record demands that he should do that.

“He takes the penalties, 100 per cent. They agree to give him the penalties but I think free-kicks around the box, Bruno’s just wiping the ball and putting it down.” he added.

Ronaldo joined his teen club Manchester United for a second stint after 2003 before moving to Real Madrid to 2009 from Juventus on last Friday and would inevitably be the center of Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s attack.

Since joining Manchester United in 2020 from Portuguese side Sporting CP, Bruno has made himself an pivotal part of United’s offence, the playmaker has been involved in most of United’s goals being their top scorer for the previous season himself.

Ferdinand believed that the arrival of Ronaldo, has not put Bruno’s importance in jeopardy and he believed that Bruno would be glad to share his goal involvements with his Portuguese compatriot if that brings better for Manchester United.

“I think Bruno sees the bigger picture, that this guy can get us over the line to win us trophies,” he added. “If that means my percentage of goal involvements goes down but he gets his hands on a big trophy, he’d take that all day long.”

Ronaldo’s homecoming had stirred up a lot of nostalgia and hopes among the fans, who think that the Portuguese duo would bolster their chances of ending their trophy drought this season.

Although all the formalities have been done, the fans will have to hold their patience to watch their Talisman in his red shirt, until September 11, when Ronaldo is set to make his debut against New Castle United in Premier League, before the Red Devils play Young Boys in the Champions League.
