Dubai: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 20 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 clash on Tuesday (October 13) but CSK skipper MS Dhoni came under the scanner of fans, he was slammed by netizens after the match for an incident that happened during the match.

The incident happened during the 19th over of SRH’s innings, when pacer Shardul Thakur
was bowling to SRH’s batsman Rashid Khan with 24 runs required off 11 balls and Thakur had delivered bowled outside the off stump. It was declared a ‘wide’ by umpire Paul Reiffel.

Umpire Reiffel, who played 35 Tests for Australia before retiring, Reiffel gave the signal for a wide both arms outstretched at shoulder height when Dhoni began protesting. Reiffel seemed to change his mind midway through the signal and the ball went down as legitimate in the crucial over of SRH’s unsuccessful run chase.

Commentator Ian Bishop said on ESPNcricinfo that Reiffel had erred and “He started calling it a wide, he looked up, saw Dhoni and he changed his mind,”
“I am someone who is sympathetic to the umpires because it is a difficult job, but tonight I will say that Reiffel made a mistake,” Bishop said.

After the match fans started criticizing Dhoni and Reiffel for changing his decision under pressure from Dhoni. “Poor refereeing! Sad to see an elite referee bogged down by the stature of a cricketer,” said a Twitter user. “Poor refereeing!
