Bengaluru: Vidwath Kaverappa’s stunning four-wicket haul guided South Zone to bowl out North Zone for 195 as they took the upper hand despite Qamran Iqbal’s determined knock of 76. However, North Zone staged a late fightback with the ball as South Zone stumbled to 40/2 at stumps, leaving them trailing by 155 runs at the end of Day 1 on Sunday, August 30, in the Duleep Trophy second semifinal at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 2 in Bengaluru.
The second semifinal began with North Zone opting to bat first, but they endured a disappointing start and were eventually bowled out for just 195 in 59.1 overs. Karnataka’s pace bowler Vidwath Kaverappa spearheaded the South Zone bowling attack with an excellent spell of 4/66, finding valuable support from M.D. Nidheesh and Tanay Thyagarajan, who impressed with the ball by claiming two wickets each. Kavuri Saiteja and Shreyas Gopal also chipped in with one wicket apiece as South Zone delivered a clinical bowling performance to outclass North Zone and restrict them to a modest total. Despite a determined and hard-fought innings, Qamran Iqbal emerged as the backbone of North Zone’s first innings with a valuable 76 off 182 balls. He held the innings together under pressure and found crucial support from Ayush Doseja, who contributed a patient 23 off 30 balls, and later from captain Kanhaiya Wadhawan, who added a valuable 35 off 63 balls. South Zone appeared firmly in control as they began the chase, but North Zone staged a late fightback through Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar, reducing South Zone to 40/2 at stumps after 18 overs and leaving them trailing by 155 runs. Narayan Jagadeesan remained unbeaten on a fluent 34 off 58 balls, while captain Tilak Varma was also unbeaten on 1 off 3 balls.
The second semifinal of the Duleep Trophy began with North Zone winning the toss and opting to bat first. However, they suffered an early setback as opener Sanat Sangwan was dismissed for 10 off 19 balls, having struck two boundaries, with M.D. Nidheesh taking a sharp return catch to complete the dismissal. After the early setback, Qamran Iqbal and Ayush Doseja steadied the North Zone innings, stitching together a valuable 53-run partnership off 66 balls for the second wicket. Doseja played aggressively, scoring 23 off 30 balls with five boundaries, while Iqbal provided solid support at the other end. North Zone moved to 65/1 at the second drinks break before the partnership was finally broken, with Doseja dismissed after being caught down the leg side off Kavuri Saiteja. North Zone managed only seven more runs before Abdul Samad joined the crease and provided some counter-attacking momentum, striking two boundaries. However, Shreyas Gopal removed him for 16 off 19 balls as he fell into the trap while attempting a hard cut shot. After the wicket, North Zone suffered a dramatic batting collapse, with Vidwath Kaverappa producing a stunning spell and playing a key role in the downfall. North Zone quickly lost Nitish Sidhu for 5 off 11 balls, followed by Abid Mushtaq for just 1 off 8 balls and Anshul Kamboj for 2 off 11 balls. The collapse left North Zone reeling at 184/8 as South Zone seized complete control of the innings. He conceded just 66 runs in his spell and finished with an outstanding economy rate of 4.40. Nidheesh then wrapped up the innings by dismissing Gurnoor Brar for a duck, as North Zone were bowled out for 195 in 59.1 overs. Vidwath found excellent support from M.D. Nidheesh, who returned figures of 2/36, while Tanay Thyagarajan also impressed with a disciplined spell, claiming 2/36. The pair looked well-settled at the drinks break, but North Zone soon fought back strongly with the ball. South Zone suddenly found themselves in trouble as Anshul Kamboj bowled Ricky Bhui for 5 off 39 balls, while Gurnoor Brar trapped Shaik Rasheed LBW for a duck. South Zone were reduced to 39/2 after 17.2 overs. Captain Tilak Varma then joined Jagadeesan at the crease. Jagadeesan continued to look composed, playing a fluent unbeaten knock of 34 off 58 balls, while Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 1 off 3 balls at the close of play. The day ended with South Zone on 40/2 after 18 overs, leaving them 155 runs behind.
South Zone will look to build a strong partnership on Day 2 and steadily reduce the 155-run deficit, keeping their hopes alive in the chase. North Zone, meanwhile, will be eager to bounce back after a disappointing first innings and will look to strike early, make crucial breakthroughs, and put South Zone under pressure as they aim to wrap up the innings.
