Kolkata: I-League side Mohammedan Sporting Club has appointed former Russia national team assistant manager Andrey Chernyshov as the head coach for the next season. The 53-year-old has been appointed for a period of one year with an option of extending his contract based on his performances.

According to reports, the Kolkata-based club had interviewed two Spanish coaches and one Scottish coach with varied experiences in Indian football before deciding on the Russian. He will be replacing Shankarlal Chakraborty.

“Yes. Andrey Chernyshov has been appointed for a period of one year with an option of extending the contract,” a club official on condition of anonymity confirmed to this website.

The Russian has worked with clubs such as FC Spartak Moscow, FC Dinamo Tbilisi, FC Vitebsk, and FK Spartak Subotica. He has also managed the Russian U-21 team and been the assistant manager to the Russian senior national team. In his playing days, he played as a centre-half with clubs such as Dynamo Moscow and Royal Antwerp FC.

Mohammedan Sporting regained promotion to the I-League last season after a gap of seven years. However, on a negative note, the club saw changes in the head coach position four times. Yan Law and Saheed Ramon managed the club in the 2nd division I-League. In the I-league Spanish Jose Hevia took charge before being sacked in the middle of the tournament.

Mohammedan SC finished sixth in the 2020-2021 I-League and will be looking for an improved performance this year. They finished fourth in the league stage, with 16 points from 10 matches. The I-League title was eventually won by Gokulam Kerala.
