Late winner from Luis Suarez takes Atletico Madrid atop the table

Alava: A late winner from Luis Suarez helped Atletico Madrid snatch a 2-1 victory over Alaves on Sunday (January 3) and sent his side two points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table.

Atletico took the lead late in the first half. Marcos Llorente on 41 minutes with his latest long-range effort put Atletico ahead. The Spaniard collected Suarez’s pass, cut inside from the right and found Fernando Pacheco’s bottom-left corner.

Alaves defender Victor Laguardia was sent off in the second half which made it easier for the visitors, in spite of being reduced to 10 men Alaves had a flurry of late chances and on 84 minutes they equalised, when Atletico defender Felipe diverted a cross from Alaves striker, Joselu into his own net.

However, they clinched a vital victory and regained their top spot when substitute Joao Felix cut the ball across goal and Suarez pounced from less than a metre output the ball into the net, and clinched three important away points.
