La Liga: Xavi Hernandez makes Barcelona debut with Catalan Derby victory

Xavi Hernandez started his managerial stint at FC Barcelona with a 1-0 win in the Catalam derby, against Espanyol in La Liga. With fans pouring in for the Xavi debut at Camp Nou, a Memphis Depay goal handed them a reason to celebrate.

For, Xavi’s first game as the FC Barcelona manager, 74,418 fans turned and the tempo of Camp Nou was upbeat. The optimism that Xavi’s arrival brought showed on the streets as well. The home fans were not left disappointed as their team played on of their best match of the season also recorded their first win in last five league matches.

Barcelona were dominating since the very first minute, they dominated the entire first half with chances missed by Memphis Depay, Nico Gonzalez and 17 year old debutant Ilias Akhomach. Barcelona could easily got their well deserved lead, only stopped by their lack of prolific finishing.

The first ended in Barcelona maintaining the authority of the game but failing to find the net. It took less than 40 seconds after play resumed in the second half, for Barça to get a penalty. The spot kick was converted by Depay.

Barcelona maintained more than 70% possession,as Espanyol had little choice than to defend with five men at the back. Although during the final moments, the visitors had threatning chances to score the equaliser. Raul de Tomas hit the post twice during the closing minutes, as Barça escaped with the three points.

With a very important victory, that marks the beginning of an new era at FC Barcelona, the win will provide the new coach as well as the players the much needed confidence. As next up for Barcelona, is a must win match against Benfica in UEFA Champions League, to keep their UCL run alive.
